NASCUS Celebrates “Cooperation for a Prosperous World” on International Credit Union Day 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 16, 2025

ARLINGTON, VA — On October 16, 2025, credit union members across the globe celebrate International Credit Union Day®, an annual event recognizing the credit union movement’s impact, history, and achievements. Now in its 77th year, the 2025 theme — “Cooperation for a Prosperous World” — highlights the power of collaboration and the shared commitment to financial inclusion and community prosperity.

The National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS) proudly joins more than 74,000 credit unions in 104 countries, representing over 411 million members worldwide, in commemorating this global occasion. Credit unions continue to stand apart as not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide affordable services and strengthen local economies — proving to be a driving force for positive economic and social change.

NASCUS brings together state regulatory agencies, state and federal credit unions, credit union leagues, and system stakeholders to foster collaboration and dialogue. By uniting diverse perspectives and expertise, NASCUS helps shape better policies, strengthen regulatory effectiveness, and promote a safe, sound, and growth-oriented credit union system. As the professional association for state credit union regulators, NASCUS serves as a leading advocate for the state system and a strong defender of the dual chartering structure that underpins innovation and consumer choice.

Since its founding in 1948, International Credit Union Day® has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October — a time for credit unions to honor their shared legacy and to raise awareness of the cooperative model’s unique ability to serve underserved and unbanked populations. Today, an estimated 1.4 billion people worldwide remain unbanked, underscoring the continued relevance of credit unions in advancing financial access and opportunity.

The event is organized by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and is supported by national associations and federations worldwide. On this day, credit unions unite through membership drives, community fundraisers, and local celebrations that reflect the spirit of cooperation and service that defines the movement.
