ARLINGTON, VA — On October 15, 2026, credit union members worldwide celebrate the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day®. This annual event recognizes the credit union movement’s history, achievements, and impact on communities worldwide. This year’s theme, “Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World,” highlights the enduring value of trust, stability, and cooperation in an increasingly complex financial environment.
The National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS) proudly joins credit unions and financial cooperatives worldwide in recognizing this occasion. Serving more than 400 million members across over 100 countries, credit unions continue to demonstrate the strength of the cooperative model. As not-for-profit financial institutions, they provide accessible financial services, support local economies, and prioritize their members’ and communities’ needs.
NASCUS brings together state regulatory agencies, state and federal credit unions, credit union leagues, and industry stakeholders to encourage collaboration and the exchange of ideas. By connecting diverse perspectives and expertise, NASCUS supports effective regulation and supervision, sound public policy, and a safe, resilient, and innovative credit union environment.
NASCUS remains committed to strengthening the state credit union system and protecting the dual chartering structure that supports innovation, competition, and consumer choice. This collaborative approach reflects the same cooperative principles celebrated on International Credit Union Day.
Since 1948, the Credit Union Movement has observed International Credit Union Day annually on the third Thursday of October. The occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the movement’s shared history, celebrate its achievements, and reinforce the importance of financial inclusion. With billions of people worldwide still facing barriers to financial services, the cooperative model continues to play an important role in expanding access and strengthening financial well-being.
International Credit Union Day is organized by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), with support from the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions and national credit union associations and federations around the world. Credit unions will mark the occasion through community events, volunteer activities, and member engagement initiatives, sharing their celebrations using #ICUDay2026.
