Lincoln teacher finds creative ways to teach history

April 7, 2023 – NBC 10 News, the Rhode Island Department of Education and Ocean State Credit Union are teaming up to present the Golden Apple Award to outstanding teachers.

This week’s recipient, Lincoln High School history teacher Casey Carrm was nominated by one of her students. A huge entourage of family, friends and educators, joined NBC 10 News to surprise Carr in her classroom.

The Deputy Commissioner of Education Lisa Odom Villella presented the award. “I’m so honored. This is pretty touching,” Carr said. She was nominated by Ian Lanctot, a student, who said she is among the most trusted people in the school and has a creative way of teaching.

For example, in a lesson on the Berlin Wall, students stacked up desks and split the classroom. It was the capitalists on one side and communists on the other.


Navigant Credit Union Honored As One Of Rhode Island’s Best Places To Work

June 9, 2022 –Navigant Credit Union has been honored as one of Providence Business News’ Best Places to Work.

Navigant Credit Union was selected as one of 69 honorees for this year’s awards, which were held in-person for the first time since 2019. Each of the companies recognized for this year’s program were judged based on human resources policies and confidential surveys of employees put together by Best Companies Group.

Navigant Credit Union finished in the Top Five in the event’s “Large Employers” category, which recognizes businesses with between 150-499 employees. Read more

People’s Credit Union Expands Its Commitment With Rhode Island Athletics

December 9, 2021 / KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Rhode Island Athletics and its athletics multimedia rightsholder, LEARFIELD’s Rhody Sports Properties, announced today an elevated multi-year relationship with People’s Credit Union. Most notably, the community-based financial institution will serve as the first-ever “Official Credit Union of URI Women’s Athletics.”

One key component of the new integrated relationship is a contribution from People’s Credit Union to URI’s “Friends of Women’s Athletics Fund” for each win by a Rhode Island women’s team. Additionally, the unique sponsorship designation provides People’s Credit Union with increased visibility during various women’s home athletic competitions, as well as on official URI social platforms and GoRhody.com.

“As People’s Credit Union’s relationship with URI continues to grow, we are thrilled now to be ‘The Official Credit Union of URI’s Women’s Athletics.’ It will be our largest partnership and we look forward to the student athletes bringing their leadership skills to new community initiatives and youth focused activities that the Credit Union has planned,” stated Sean Daly, President and Chief Executive Officer for People’s Credit Union.

To complement its URI connection further into the community, coaches and student-athletes from URI’s women’s programs will join People’s Credit Union in youth-driven initiatives each year of the agreement. Credit Unions of Rhode Island Present $65,000 Donation to Special Olympics Rhode Island at Charity Golf Tournament

August 3, 2021  — The Credit Unions of Rhode Island recently showcased a $65,000 dollar donation in mid-July to Special Olympics Rhode Island, the largest organization that transforms lives through the joy of sport for people with intellectual disabilities. Since 1998, the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, members of
the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA) have supported their charitable partner and remain one of the largest corporate partners of Special Olympics Rhode Island.

Members of the Social Responsibility Committee presented a check in the amount of $65,000 to Special Olympics Rhode Island Executive Director Dennis DeJesus and athlete Michael Lucca. These funds represented the total amount raised in the year by credit unions, members, sponsors, etc. and brings their twenty-four-year total to more than $1.38 million.

The presentation took place during the annual Credit Unions of Rhode Island Charity Golf Tournament held at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass. Credit Unions of Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee Chairman David Dupere, from Wave Federal Credit Union, expressed his gratitude to all the credit unions in Rhode Island for their support in the past year during the pandemic and to all the business partners who have stepped up through these times for Special Olympics Rhode Island. “We are happy to be together again and share these special moments.”

Rhode Island Legislative Update

March 09, 2021 — The Association remains active before the Rhode Island General Assembly, and is currently monitoring approximately 20 bills impactful to credit unions and their operations.

Most recently, testimony was submitted on behalf of the credit unions of Rhode Island to the Senate Committee on Judiciary on legislation relative to elder financial abuse. The companion Senate and House bills are supported by credit unions as they help further the goals and efforts to eradicate financial or material exploitation of elders’ funds, property, and assets. Notably, the bills contain extended reporting and training timeframes that were requested in oral and written testimony provided in previous legislative sessions. The full testimony is available HERE. The Association will update members with any developments.

Additionally, public hearings on financial literacy legislation, Senate 349House 5073, and House 5491 are expected shortly. The Association will submit testimony, and member credit union thoughts are welcome as to the impact of proposed legislation bills.
