July 7, 2008 - NASCUS’ 2008 Annual School for State Credit Union Examiners begins July 8 at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) Seidman Center in Arlington, Virginia.
State examiners from across the country will attend the three-and-one-half day school that is designed to keep examiners up-to-date on examination best practices and the latest news affecting state examiners on the state and national levels. The school will also feature an interactive communication skills workshop designed to enhance the attendees writing and presentation skills.
“The Annual School will be a great opportunity for state examiners to improve their examination and communication skills, as well as to discuss the biggest challenges that they are facing, all in a regulator-only environment,” said Jenny Champagne, vice president of regulatory development and education for NASCUS.
The first day of the school will feature a state roundtable facilitated by NASCUS management, followed by Sally Myers and Rob Johnson of c. myers presenting on asset/liability management best practices. In addition, Suzy Gardner, senior examination specialist with the FDIC, will talk to attendees about mortgage lending examination best practices.
On July 9-10, the school will feature a communication skills workshop, led by Lauren Cnare, a communications consultant for NASCUS. Participants will focus on improving communications with credit union managers, peers and others through reviewing, preparing and presenting case studies. Thursday’s agenda will also include two sessions from Michael Benardo of the FDIC’s Cyber-Fraud and Financial Crimes Section. Benardo will cover emerging financial crimes and fraud identification techniques for examiners.
A half-day of forums and roundtables on Friday, July 11 will wrap up the Annual School. A forum with credit union CEOs will provide examiners with a better idea of how exams are viewed from the credit union perspective. In addition, NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney will provide attendees with a NASCUS update and facilitate an examiners roundtable to close the school.
Beyond the work in the classroom, students will be treated with the opportunity to attend a baseball game at the new Nationals Park, home of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals. The park, located just south of the Capitol and adjacent to the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. is in its first year of use and is receiving many positive reviews.
