ARLINGTON, Va. — More than 200 state regulators, state credit union leaders, league executives, federal regulators and dual chartering supporters will gather in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, August 9-11 for the 2007 NASCUS State System Summit.
The only annual gathering of the state credit union system will feature speakers and presentations on mission critical credit union operational and examination issues. NASCUS will hold its 2007 Annual Meeting on August 10, where incoming NASCUS chairman George Reynolds (GA) will begin his two-year term. In addition, on August 9, the Credit Union Advisory Council will hold its Annual Meeting and NASCUS will present its prestigious Pierre Jay Award.
Prior to the State System Summit, NASCUS leadership will hold their Thirdly Business Meetings, August 7-8. NASCUS’ standing committees, Education, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs and Performance Standards will meet along with the NASCUS Board and Credit Union Executive Council. The National Institute of State Credit Union Examination (NISCUE), the educational arm of NASCUS, will also hold a meeting of its trustees during the Thirdly Business Meetings.

• D. Scott Parsons, former U.S. Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary, will focus on the importance of public and private partnerships in homeland security and disaster recovery efforts.
• National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board member and NASCUS liaison Gigi Hyland will offer a presentation entitled “The grand Perhaps” to discuss up-to-the minute insights on regulatory and legislative issues impacting credit union operations and service.
• Dr. Jim Likens, President and Dean of Western CUNA Management School, will survey challenges to credit union balance sheets.
• Bruce Jolly, NASCUS General Counsel and partner with Venable, LLP, will discuss legal challenges and issues facing the state and federal systems.
• Bob Hoel, Filene Fellow in Residence, Filene Institute, and Dr. William Jackson, professor at University of Alabama and renowned capital expert, will lead a panel discussion on competing solutions for current and future credit union capital challenges.
• Cliff Rosenthal, Executive Director, National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU), will discuss growth and survival strategies for small credit unions.
• A panel discussion will feature the leaders of NASCUS and major credit union associations sharing their views on what the system must do to position itself for future success. Panelists include: Incoming NASCUS Chairman George Reynolds, senior deputy commissioner, Georgia Department of Banking and Finance; NASCUS Credit Union Advisory Council Chairman Mendell Thompson, president and CEO, America’s Christian Credit Union, Glendora, California; Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Chairman Allan Kemp McMorris, president/CEO, Oakland County Credit Union, Waterford, MI; NAFCU Board Member John Tippets, president/CEO of American Airlines Federal Credit Union, Dallas, TX; and AACUL Chairman Rick Pillow, president, Virginia Credit Union League.
