DANA POINT, CA — George Latham, a dedicated and passionate advocate for the dual chartering system and regulator with the Virginia Bureau of Financial Institutions, was honored with the 2006 Pierre Jay Award at the NASCUS State System Summit in Dana Point, California.
NASCUS Chair Linda Jekel (WA) presented the award at the NASCUS 41st Anniversary Gala Dinner on Thursday, August 10. Latham has been active with NASCUS for more than 15 years; having served as Chairman, member of the Board of Directors and member of various committees.
“It is an honor to be among the previous recipients of this award and I am humbled,” said Latham. “I enjoy what I do, and it almost doesn’t feel right to get an award for doing something you enjoy.”
The Pierre Jay Award is given to individuals who demonstrate outstanding service, leadership, achievement and efforts which benefit NASCUS and the dual chartering system. The award was established to honor the memory of Pierre Jay, Massachusetts Banking Commissioner from 1906-1909 and the father of the First State Credit Union Act.
“George has actively built partnerships with the credit union community over the years and worked tirelessly to preserve and advance the dual chartering system and oppose federal preemption,” said Jekel upon presenting the award. “George has done so much to help preserve the state credit union system.”
Latham began his career at the Virginia agency as an examiner in 1974. Three years later he served as manager of a credit union and then returned to the agency in 1978. In 1986, he was promoted to oversee the administration and supervision of Virginia’s state-chartered credit unions as deputy commissioner.
“Some of the now Pierre Jay Award recipients including Mike Fitzgerald, Gary Mielock, Gavin Gee, myself and others sat down years ago and shared ideas on NASCUS’ direction,” said Latham. “And it’s remarkable to work among so many good people at NASCUS, including the Boards and staff. All the things we talked about have been made possible by these remarkable people and my thought on this award is that it is a shared experience. I am so appreciative.”
As the 2006 Pierre Jay Award recipient, Latham joins past Pierre Jay Award honorees including Ella Robinson, former Kentucky regulator, Mike Fitzgerald; former Michigan regulator; Gary Oakland of BECU in Seattle, Washington; Gavin Gee, Idaho regulator; Jim Forney, Iowa regulator and Jim Blaine of State Employees’ Credit Union in Raleigh, North Carolina.
