PRESS RELEASE
October 6, 2006
ASHEVILLE, NC — NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney presented updates on NASCUS and the state credit union system to North Carolina credit union leaders in Asheville on October 5.
Fortney joined more than 60 North Carolina credit union leaders in Asheville for the North Carolina Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) Fall Conference. Fortney updated the group on NASCUS projects and initiatives including the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee request for data on the state credit union system. She also briefed the group on legislative and regulatory issues affecting state credit unions including provisions of the recently passed Regulatory Relief Act of 2006.
“NASCUS greatly appreciates the opportunity to address the North Carolina state credit union community, and we are grateful for their partnership in NASCUS’ efforts to strengthen the state credit union system and to preserve dual chartering,” said Fortney.
While in Asheville, Fortney presented at the North Carolina Credit Union Commission Meeting held in conjunction with the CUES Conference. At that meeting, she expanded on NASCUS activities and state regulators’ collaborative efforts to collect data on the state credit union system. Fortney also highlighted North Carolina Administrator of Credit Unions Jerrie Lattimore’s long-standing relationship and leadership with NASCUS. Lattimore is on the NASCUS Board of Directors and is a former NASCUS chairman.
“NASCUS takes every opportunity to provide in person updates on issues affecting the state credit union system to our NASCUS partners in North Carolina and around the country,” said Fortney. “It’s important that we constantly engage in dialogue on important issues that affect the state system in order to enhance our advocacy efforts on behalf of state regulators and state-chartered credit unions.”
North Carolina state credit union regulators and executives are active participants in NASCUS. In addition to Lattimore’s NASCUS involvement, Jim Blaine, president of State Employees’ Credit Union in Raleigh, is a member of the Credit Union Advisory Council Board of Directors and Jack Braswell, president of Members Credit Union in Winston Salem, is the North Carolina NASCUS State Liaison. The North Carolina Credit Union League is also a Dual Chartering Benefactor member of NASCUS.
