A special message from Mary Martha Fortney, President and CEO,
June 27, 2008
NASCUS is excited to hold our third State System Summit, August 21-23, 2008 in Seattle, Washington. Two years ago, NASCUS decided to reinvent its Annual Conference and Symposium into a more interactive session focused on providing the opportunities for dialogue on the most pressing issues facing our industry today.
The Summit is the cornerstone of NASCUS’ year, a time for collaboration and action on the state regulatory and credit union system’s biggest issues. Joining the speaker-line up are some of the industry’s most renowned credit union and financial sector experts addressing today’s critical issues such as member business lending (MBL), unrelated business income tax (UBIT), the mortgage crisis, compliance hot topics and the overall volatility in financial markets.
Some of our notable speakers and their discussion topics include:
• Jim Devine, commercial lending consultant and trainer, on the impact of the credit crisis on member business loans;
• Brad Cunningham, vice president, financial consulting services, WesCorp, on credit union ALM strategies for challenging times;
• Jeff Thredgold, renowned economist, speaker and author, will address the audience with his slightly irreverent, up-to-the-minute "tour" of the economy, financial markets, education, government and a sneak preview of the future;
• Franklin Drake, frequent NASCUS Speaker, partner at Smith Debnam, LLC, on compliance updates for Truth in Lending and Truth and Savings;
• Gavin Gee, Director, Idaho Department of Finance, on state regulators’ responses to the mortgage crisis;
• Dennis Dollar, former NCUA Chairman, on credit union system hot topics; and
• Richard Hagar, nationally known real estate expert, on nationwide mortgage issues; and many more speakers and breakout sessions.
Several sessions at the Summit will focus on UBIT and related IRS filings. Kevin Fincher, partner, Clifton Gunderson LLP, will lead a session on UBIT, FIN 48 and the IRS Form 990 filings. Community First Credit Union President Cathie Tierney will address the Summit audience with updates on her credit union’s UBIT litigation and how her Board decided to file suit against the IRS on this important issue. A member of the UBIT Steering Committee will join Tierney for this discussion.
In addition, state regulators will have regulator-only meetings with NCUA and a NASCUS Regulators Only Session. These sessions provide opportunities for candid, confidential regulator-to-regulator discussions.
This year, NASCUS will once again host the district breakfasts. The district breakfasts allow state regulators and Advisory Council members from the same geographic regions to meet in smaller groups for a candid discussion of regional issues and concerns.
We look forward to seeing everyone in Seattle for this valuable event. More information on the Summit can be found here.
