Education for Directors Remains Critical for Today's Credit Unions

A special message from Mary Martha Fortney, President and CEO
May 2012

In 2008, at the request of state regulators, NASCUS began a training series aimed at education for credit union directors. Since then, the demand for education for credit union directors is growing prompting NASCUS to continue and expand our Directors Colleges throughout the nation.

Since the inception of the program, we've been to 20 states and trained more than 1,500 directors. Right now, we have six colleges scheduled through July with more to come. Education for directors will remain a training priority for NASCUS in addition to our other educational offerings for state examiners and credit unions.

As any credit union manager or board member will tell you, with growth comes additional regulatory, compliance and operational considerations. At the same time, Congress and the various federal and state regulatory agencies are keeping a keen eye on all aspects of financial institutions, including how they are governed and regulated, in an effort to protect against another economic downturn. As such, the credit union directors' job is more complex than ever and continuing education for boards is essential.

The Directors Colleges continue to be highly rated by attendees as valuable training opportunities for credit union directors and management. The goal of these educational programs is to increase credit union directors’ understanding of the expectations regulators have of them, as well as to enhance their knowledge of various compliance and regulatory obligations. The events often include the home state regulator to discuss the regulatory expectations of a director as well as industry experts on financial statement reviews, emerging issues and compliance obligations. Sessions also include education on topics such as credit union director duties, responsibilities and training, responding to exam findings and critical compliance and regulatory issues. Faculty for these programs has included Dennis Dollar, Bob Hoel, Frank Drake, NASCUS senior management, compliance experts and many others including state regulators and league executives.

The schedule to date is below. We'll continue to add to these sessions so check back to the NASCUS Web site for up-to-date opportunities and contact us if you want to bring a Directors College to your state.
